One of the most delicious sweet drinks in the Ottoman history: Ottoman sherbet! Find out how to make this insta-worthy drink.

Ottoman Sherbet, from the Arabic sharba, meaning “a drink” is one such example. Once as popular in Turkey and parts of the Middle East such as Iran and Afghanistan as cola is today, this sweet drink, prepared using fruit and flower petals, has a long and rich history.

“Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join us. Life is so endlessly delicious.” Ruth Reichl

INGREDIENTS (1,5 liter)

  • 2 hands full of fragrant pink and/or red rose petals

  • 1 cup sugar (you can add more if you like it really sweet)

  • 1,5 l water

  • juice of 1/2 lemon

INSTRUCTIONS

Put the sugar, the petals and about 1,5 glass of water in a blender en blend until the sugar has fully melted. Put this mixture in a bowl and cover it with stretch film and let it cool in the refrigerator for 12-15 hours.

Afterwards, take the mixture and put it in a clean cheesecloth and squeeze all the juices out in a pot and add the lemon juice and remaining water.

Put the pot on the stove and turn it on. The sherbet has to boil, but before it boils, taste it and make sure the amount of sugar is good for you. If it's too sweet, add more water and if you like it sweeter, add more sugar.

Turn off the stove once it boils and let it completely cool down before pouring it in a carafe. Afterwards let it cool for 4-5 hours and you're done!
